Treat Your Sleep Apnea with a Mouthpiece | Los Angeles | Malibu | California

A sleep apnea mouthpiece is made from a mold to fit to your mouth and can be fitted by a dentist. This custom mouth guard is designed to prevent the tongue and soft tissue of the throat from blocking the air passages and helps to eliminate mild cases of sleep apnea. A sleep apnea mouthpiece works by pushing your lower jaw forward, which opens up your airway.

Sleep apnea mouthpieces are generally developed in two different types:

Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS)

This is the most widely used type of mouthpiece. It is designed to push the lower jaw (the mandible) and tongue forward. These two movements work together to keep the airways open.

One of the most popular MAS mouthpieces is the SomnoDent sleep apnea appliance, which is made in three different models that provide different levels of comfort depending on the anatomy of your mouth.  All models can be customized to include additional lateral movement, elastic retention and vertical adjustment.

Tongue Retainer

This type of mouthpiece is custom-made using a softer, more pliable material that includes a compartment that fits around the tongue to hold it forward by means of suction.   A tongue retainer is more effective than the mandibular repositioning appliances but is more difficult to get used to so they are used less often.
